Overall Grade: 3.87 (out of 5.0) Back with their fourth studio release, you truly do feel that Lifehouse's new album is appropriately titled when you listen to the album. Who We Are sounds really like who Lifehouse is. I've felt that since their debut album No Name Face, the band has tried going in many different directions musically. Stanley Climbfall and 2005's self-titled album each had a different sound than its predecessor. With Who We Are, I feel the fan gets everything…a little bit of everything we've heard from Lifehouse over the years – what we've come to love from each of the albums – all rolled into one. Not just the same, but you get a new sound as well. Lead singer Jason Wade stretches his voice to places he hasn't been before in the opening track "Disarray". Powerful songs yes, but fans aren't used to soul-searching lyrics from Lifehouse. In "Disarray" Wade sings "struggling between the facts and fiction/ I'm alone/but I'm alive", "everyone around me is trying to make a statement/ then there's me/I'm just trying to survive" , and "someday I'm going to find it/wish I knew what I was looking for/ it's all in the disarray." The band's first single from the album might be one of the best songs the guys have ever written. "First Time" is a catchy song about realizing there is more in that stage when you're dating someone right before it turns into a relationship. The classic "Lifehouse-like-songs" that have turned into hits and that fans have come to love by the band over years are dominant on the album as well, with tracks like "Whatever It Takes" and "Broken". "Storm" is a great mellow tune to play out the ending to the album. The band's best album since their debut, Who We Are is a fantastic album and made me a believer in Lifehouse yet again. After the last couple albums only having a handful of solid tracks and the band going in different directions with their sound in every album, I hope that Lifehouse has definitely found that Who We Are is who the fans want as well. |
