STORY OF THE YEAR

While at home writing music for the band's third studio release, Story of the Year front man Dan Marsala took some time to do a Q&A. Adam Sandler, having fun, and obviously music were just some of the things Dan discussed.

Asif: Hey dude, how's it going?

Dan: Everything is going awesome! Just at home working on the new record. Writing a lot of music.

Asif: Sweetness! I'll get more into music later. Umm…yeah. So,  Adam Sandler is the man, and I know you think so too! What's your favorite Adam Sandler movie?

Dan: Probably "Happy Gilmore" or "Wedding Singer". I like the classics!

Asif: "Son of a b*tch ball. Why can't you just go home." (laughs) Anyway, have you seen "Reign Over Me"? Do you like Sandler's serious side too?

Dan: No, I haven't seen that yet, but it looks good. And yeah I like his serious side. I think he's a great all around actor.

Asif: I know you used to work at a Papa John's back in the day and that you loved it! What made that job your favorite up to that point in your life and so enjoyable?

Dan: The main reason that job was amazing was the fact that every one of my friends worked there with me. Ryan, Josh, Timmy, Trost, along with a million other awesome people. We just hung out and had fun all the time. Kinda like my current job!

Asif: Yeah, speaking of fun! Just from conversation, your guys' website and MySpace pages, and watching you guys on your live DVD, it seems that you guys never take yourselves too seriously and are just having a good time all the time messing around - even with each other on stage.

Dan: Having fun is the key to life! Music is supposed to be a release from everything, and it truly makes all of us happy. Therefore there is no reason to take anything too seriously. Just have fun and enjoy it while you can!

Asif: I'm gonna keep with the fun theme for a bit longer. Can you share your craziest story from the road?

Dan: Everyday there is a new crazy story to tell. Wait for the new DVD [later this summer] to come out and you'll experience some craziness for yourself!

Asif: With all the fun you guys have jumping, diving, and running around on stage, I'm sure all of you guys have gotten hurt at one point or another. What is the worst injury you've got from your stage antics?

Dan: We've had many bruises and sprains, but nothing real serious. Adam tore some ligaments in his ankle and had to wear a big boot brace for like a month. He was bummed about that. We'll play through anything though. We've had numerous shows where one of us is throwing up in between songs and we keep on rocking.

Asif: Tore some ligaments? Damn, that sucks! You guys rule for just keep rocking straight through it and not letting up on your crazy antics! What about fun off the road though - when you aren't on the road touring, what do you like to do for fun?

Dan: I do a lot of skateboarding. I try to skate at least a couple times a week. It's a good escape from everything else in the world.

Asif: Cool. I've heard you were a fan of McDonald's.  What's your favorite thing to order at The Big Golden Arch?

Dan: I order a number 2 with no onions [ a #2 is two cheeseburgers for all you non-McD's value meal lovers], but I haven't been there in over a month. I've been trying to cut back on the fast food. That sh*t is bad news!

Asif: Right on dude! Gotta cut back on the fast food! For sh*ts and giggles, have you ever ordered a Happy Meal just to play with the toys?

Dan: I don't think I've ever ordered a Happy Meal!

Asif: Alright, now back to music. So, how is the new album coming along?

Dan: Album is coming along good. We have over 20 song ideas. Some are more finished than others. Some of the sh*t is amazing!

Asif: Sweet! I wish I could hear some of it! As I'm sure the rest of the fans do too! Are you guys doing anything differently this time around compared to the processes for the first couple albums?

Dan: The process is pretty much the same, except we are taking a lot more time to write this time around - which is cool because sometimes things get rushed and you wish you could have a little more time to put some finishing touches on stuff. So far we have a lot of heavy sh*t, and also a couple real mellow songs, and some normal mid-tempo rock songs. It should be a well rounded record.

Asif: Man, that sounds so bad ass, I can't wait! So, you've headlined clubs, played the Nintendo Fusion tour, Warped Tour, Taste of Chaos, have opened up for Linkin Park…I could keep going and going, but you get the point. What has been your favorite tour so far?

Dan: I enjoy headlining tours the most. Mainly because it is all of the fans who truly love our music and are gonna sing along and go crazy. That's what playing shows is all about. Although the Linkin Park tour was huge and truly amazing every day.

Asif: Awesome! Yeah man, I think I saw you guys like four times in one year a few years back. Jaw-dropping experience every single time. You guys REALLY put on a show – I think a lot of other bands and artists out there could take a class given by you guys called "How to Put On A Show 101". (laughs) Anyway man, thanks so much for your time. See you on the road!

Dan: No problem man. See you soon!
